Sustainability
Marton Mills Co Ltd strives to achieve good environmental practice and operate in a sustainable manner beyond legal and regulatory requirements.
We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral part of our business strategy and operating methods.
We believe that the most effective way to be sustainable is to regularly assess and improve current procedures in order to minimize any waste produced.Where waste cannot be avoided we ensure they are disposed of carefully and recycled where possible in order for us to move closer to our aim of zero waste to landfill. We currently have several systems in place to help us reduce our waste:
1. Textile waste is collected and recycled by James Robinson Fibres Ltd
2. All used Loom Oil is collected and recycled
3. Regular Cardboard collection
4. General waste recycling facilities in all departments
In 2018 we had 260 solar panels fitted with the aim of reducing our carbon footprint. Since installation we have generated 52,123 kWh of energy which helps power our looms.
At Marton Mills consistent quality and exemplary service is provided as standard. Our goal is to produce high quality fabric that will stand the test of time.To ensure this we have built long-term relationships with our suppliers and undertake strict quality control protocol and testing. Our current procedures include Quality standard ISO 9001 Certification. We have proudly held this standard for over 20 years. All main yarn suppliers carry the Oeko-Tex Standard In house pilling test carried out.
The majority of Marton Mills business is for Schoolwear, which uses Poly/Viscose & PolyWool yarns and finding sustainable fibre and yarn alternatives has become a priority, without jeopardising the high quality of our fabrics.
We have been working on several products including:
1. Recycled Poly Wool
2. Researching sustainable Viscose
3. Wool also makes up a 5th of our annual sales in 2018. We try to use and promote Wool where possible as it is a natural, sustainable & 100% bio-degradable. We are members of Wool mark, Campaign for Wool & British Wool supporting ethical growing of wool in both the UK & overseas.
We work closely with our dyers and finishers to ensure they are fully compliant with the most stringent environmental legislation. As standard we currently apply a fluorocarbon finish to every Polyester Viscose fabric, meaning the life of the garment is extended, with the added benefit of any spills or surface stains being easily removed. The current fluorocarbon we apply is C6 which is less persistent and bio-accumulative, meaning it is less harmful. We are currently exploring a PFC Free finish and adapting our fabric to improve performance
